No. 3 Baylor Ends Lady Raiders Run in College Station
April 25, 2008
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Lady Raider tennis team put up a good fight today as they played No. 3 nationally-ranked Baylor in the second round of the 2008 Big 12 Tennis Championships. Texas Tech women's tennis fell 4-0 to the Bears, ending its season 12-12 overall, 4-7 in conference play. In doubles Tech came out firing as they went head-to-head with the Bears on all three courts. The No. 5-ranked team of Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova pulled ahead of Tech's top duo of No. 41 Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift, getting the first win 8-3. Baylor's No. 59 team of Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk finally found a break over TTU's Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter as the doubles point was clinched 8-6 on court two. Baylor continued to bring the heat into singles as they took three straight singles wins. Both No. 17 Broosova and No. 24 Zemenova took 6-2, 6-0 wins over Tech's Kelsy Garland and van der Drift. The match was clinched on court five as Potgieter was upended by BU's Stanivuk, 6-1, 7-5. "The last four weeks of our season have proved to be the most important for our team," said Head Coach Cari Groce. "Our players finally grasped the concept of how to fight and carry that mentality into their matches. They've learned that everything you do has to mean something, and they definitely understand that. Baylor is a very good team, and although we did get a few good points in there, they are just too good and are well on their way to a Big 12 Title."
